Virgin Atlantic's Sustainable Aviation Fuel Test Results

May 13, 2024 at 09:05 EDT By Spencer Howard

Head for Points: "On Wednesday, Virgin Atlantic published the scientific findings from the innovative ‘Flight100’ SAF test flight it operated in November last year."

"One key feature of Flight100 is that it required no modifications to the aircraft, engines or any other aspect of flight. It was treated as a normal, commercial operation and held to all the same safety standards. The only difference was that the fuel used came from waste sources rather than virgin fossil fuels."

Notable Highlights From The Report

The test flight was completed on a Boeing 787-9 with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. The data was compared to that of a flight on this aircraft with traditional fuel. This is how the sustainable fuel flight performed:

  • Reduced CO2e by 95 tons - Reduced emissions by ~64%
  • Improved energy density by 1% which meant the aircraft needed less fuel to make the journey
  • Particulate matter emissions reduced by ~40%

Fintech Company Offers Debit Card With Travel Credit

May 13, 2024 at 08:49 EDT By Spencer Howard

Travel In Points: "Venti, a fintech company that gives APY on your cash holding in the form of travel credit, appears to be launching a debit card. I have written about Venti here but in short, I think their take is super interesting but I haven’t been a fan of how they have executed (most notably, I still feel that their platform resembles early beta access platforms).

"Anyway, becoming a “founder” seems to come with a “free domestic flight” offer. If you read the terms you will realize that it is essentially capped at $200. Less than a month ago the offer was capped to $250. Their debit card is supposed to offer up to 5x rewards but that could mean anything."

Park Hyatt London Expected To Open Late 2024

May 10, 2024 at 11:38 EDT By Spencer Howard

One Mile At A Time"The opening of this property has been delayed considerably. The current projection is that the hotel will open in late 2024, though I imagine that has the potential to slip further. While the hotel isn’t yet bookable, we do know it will be a Category 7 World of Hyatt property, meaning that a free night redemption will cost 25,000 to 35,000 points per night."

Amex App Now Adds Search Function To Amex Offers

May 10, 2024 at 11:36 EDT By Spencer Howard

In late 2023, American Express added the ability to search your Amex Offers on their website. This makes it much easier to see if you have a specific offer or to check the terms of an offer. However, this search function was not added to the Amex app.

Fortunately, that's now changed. On Reddit, NotABostonSportsFan flagged that the American Express app now has a search bar on the Amex Offers page which allows you to run a search.

It's not big news, but it's nice to see banks make it just a bit easier to navigate their card benefits.

Forbes: "Hamidaddin was touting the rollout of the region’s upcoming “unified GCC visa,” a travel permit similar to Europe’s Schengen visa that will allow more than 30 consecutive days of inter-country travel throughout the six Gulf Cooperation Council member nations: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman. While no date has been announced, officials say the visa is expected to launch by the end of 2024."

Capital One Venture X Business Card Ditches Priority Pass Restaurants

May 9, 2024 at 13:19 EDT By Spencer Howard

Danny the Deal Guru: "Now another card seems to have made that change, the Capital One Venture X Business credit card. It’s not clear when the Venture X Business card dropped Priority Pass restaurants since there was no official announcement. But the card switched from World Elite Mastercard to Visa late last month, so that is likely the reason."

Points Wire Note:

At this point, those who have the Mastercard version of the Venture X Business Card will continue to have access to Priority Pass restaurants.

Is Using Finnair Avios At Nordic Hotels Worth It?

May 8, 2024 at 12:30 EDT By Spencer Howard

Frequent Miler: "This opportunity is certainly one to be described as “niche”. The short story is that Finnair has a few hotel brand partners that offer the opportunity to get outsized value for Avios by purchasing a voucher (think like a free night certificate) for a fixed amount of cash and fixed number of Avios that can then be used on a night when a participating hotel is offering redemption."

Points Wire Note:

At a value of 2 cents per point, this can be a surprisingly good use of Avios if you need a hotel stay and don't feel like paying cash. Of course, you might find that you can get more value out of your Avios by booking business and first class flights.
